Norwegian Embassy in Kazakhstan: Opening speech

Speech by His Royal Highness The Crown Prince at the opening of the Norwegian Embassy in Astana, Kazakhstan 5 February 2010.

Foreign Minister,
Deputy Foreign Minister,
Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,

It is a great pleasure to be here in Astana. From what I have seen so far, my impression is that the capital of Kazakhstan has innovative and interesting architecture – and I look forward to see some more of the city on my short visit.

Norway´s embassy in Kazakhstan is established at an important juncture in the development of the relations between our countries. Kazakhstan is a valuable partner for Norway both politically and economically and I believe our new Embassy in Astana will be crucial for strengthening the ties between our two countries.

A profound foundation for our friendship and cooperation were laid out in the joint declaration signed by President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Norway’s Prime Minister at the time, Kjell Magne Bondevik, in 2004. This declaration still provides an excellent framework for furthering our cooperation. Kazakhstan and Norway have many common features and interests, mainly linked to our abundant energy resources and our desire to develop them in a sustainable and environmental friendly manner. I look forward to discussing the future perspectives for cooperation of mutual benefit with the President later today.

I would like to thank all those, both in Kazakhstan and in Norway, who have contributed to the establishment of this embassy. The Finnish embassy will soon be joining us as neighbours on this floor. This is in line with our governments´ policy of Nordic cooperation in the Foreign Service.

With these words, I declare the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Astana for open.
